"KILLER LIGHT" BREADS RENAMED "THINS", HAVE FEWER CALORIES

We've got some exciting news to share! We changed the name of our "Killer Light" breads to "Thins!" They're still low-calorie versions of our popular sellers, but 21 Whole Grain "Thins" is now 60 calories per slice and Good Seed "Thins" is now 70 calories. We feel the name change will help call more attention to these products, especially their low-calorie attributes. Look for the new packaging to hit the market this week.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portland, Ore., November 5, 2012 – When Glenn Dahl asked his brother Dave – fresh out of prison for the fourth time in 20 years and looking for a clean start – to channel his creative energy into formulating new bread varieties for NatureBake, he had no idea it would take the family business into the next phase of its growth. Now, after seven years, 16 varieties, and distribution in 10 states, the company will merge all products under the popular Dave's Killer Bread brand.

"I was hoping Dave's new breads would reinvigorate NatureBake and appeal to a broader customer base of healthy bread lovers, but I had no idea how successful we would be," said Glenn Dahl. "Just as our dad started Midway Bakery in the 1950s and changed his company to NatureBake to fit the needs of his customers, we're changing too, to keep this company going strong and meeting the needs of our customers."

Two of the most popular NatureBake breads – Oregon Grains and Spelt – will undergo some exciting makeovers before adopting the Dave's Killer Bread standard, such as becoming vegan (like the rest of the DKB breads) and, in the case of Spelt, being thin-sliced to appeal to a low-calorie fan base. Spelt will be renamed Svelte Spelt. The rest of the NatureBake bread varieties will be discontinued starting on January 1, 2013.

The NatureBake and DKB operations, including staff, have been combined for years, so no jobs will be affected. Employees, one-third of whom are ex-cons like Dave, will focus their efforts on producing more of the DKB breads.

DKB has grown rapidly in seven years, evolving from four varieties sold at a weekly booth at the Portland Farmer's Market by Dave and Shobi Dahl (Glenn's son), to 16 varieties sold in grocery chains across 10 states, including Costco and Safeway stores in Hawaii. Southern California most recently joined the KillerBreadHead community, with more regions in the queue for expansion.

Known for its trademark explosion of seeds and delicious chewiness, Dave's Killer Bread is equally well known for the struggles faced by Co-Founder and President Dave Dahl, who battled depression and emerged from a life of crime to become one of the most celebrated bread artisans on the West Coast.

"Glenn took a big chance on me – and it wasn't the first time," Dave Dahl said. "I know our dad would be proud of how we've grown this company and how happy our bread makes people. It's a legacy we're proud to continue."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portland, Ore., Aug.21, 2012 – After overwhelming demand, Dave’s Killer Bread, the Northwest’s signature sandwich bread, is now available across California in Safeway and Vons stores. All Safeway locations and more than 200 Vons locations statewide now carry the top 4 best-selling varieties of Dave’s Killer Bread: Good Seed, 21 Whole Grains, Powerseed, and Blues Bread. All Vons stores in California are slated to have the bread in stock by this fall.

Demand from Southern Californians, in particular, has been heavy since the bread was introduced in Safeway stores in Northern California in September 2011. They are currently also in all WinCo and Cash & Carry stores across the state.

“Our numerous California Facebook fans have been literally begging us to expand beyond Northern California over the past year,” said co-founder and president Dave Dahl. “I love their enthusiasm, and can’t wait to meet more of them as we start doing demos in Safeway and Vons stores throughout the state.”

Known for its trademark explosion of seeds and delicious chewiness, Dave’s Killer Bread is equally well known for the struggles faced by Dahl, who battled depression and emerged from a life of crime to become one of the most celebrated bread artisans on the West Coast.

Upon learning that Dave’s Killer Bread, which boasts 16 total varieties including the fan favorite Sin Dawg, would be available throughout the state, California Facebook fans expressed their happiness, with one fan writing:

“You have NO IDEA (sic) how happy I am!!! My brother lives in the NW, and introduced me to DKB – I’ve had to order it by mail…and now, I can just jog on down to Vons to get it – hurray!”

The line of wholesome, nutritious bread has expanded rapidly since it was first introduced to hungry Portlanders at the Portland Farmer’s Market in 2005. It can now be found in major grocery chains, including Costco Warehouses in many states, from Alaska to Hawaii and Montana to Arizona. Dahl and his team hope to expand further East in the coming years.

The first in-store demos will be held at the Vons store in Corona on Friday, Aug. 24, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. (535 McKinley St.), and in Lake Elsinore on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (31564 Grap St). For more information and listings for other sampling events, please visit http://www.daveskillerbread.com/events-media/calendar.html or the Dave’s Killer Bread Facebook page.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portland, Ore., Aug 6, 2012 – After a tense culinary battle featuring some of the brightest and innovative chefs in Portland, Gregory Gourdet of Departure Restaurant and Lounge emerged victorious in the first-ever Killer Sandwich Showdown. His creation—a double decker porkstrami with pork pate, spicy salami, duck confit, duck egg, heirloom tomato, white kimchee, and field greens—wowed our guest judges and beat out sandwiches from the People’s Sandwich and Grilled Cheese Grill. As part of the competition, all three chefs were required to purchase ingredients from the Portland Farmers Market that day.

Over a hundred people flocked to the Portland Farmers Market to witness Gourdet’s triumph in the Killer Sandwich Showdown, the first of its kind, and a celebration of the 7-year anniversary of Dave’s Killer Bread being launched at the Portland Farmers Market. Second place was awarded to Matt Breslow of Grilled Cheese Grill. He made a delicious French toast with chopped Sin Dawg and nut grain bread with goat cheese chevre, chopped sage, Tails and Trotters pancetta, and bruleed sliced peaches. Third place went to Steve Carder of People's Sandwich with his awesome smoked salmon Monte Cristo with grilled cauliflower and rhubarb jam.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portland, Ore., July 24, 2012 – Hawaii Costco members can now find Dave’s Killer Bread in all seven of Costco’s Hawaiian Warehouses. Double packs of Dave’s 21 Whole Grains bread landed on store shelves on July 16th.

Known for its trademark explosion of seeds and delicious chewiness, Dave’s Killer Bread is equally well known for the story of its founder, Dave Dahl, who battled depression and emerged from a life of crime to become one of the most celebrated bread artisans on the West Coast.

“We’ve come a long way from our start at the Farmer’s Market in Portland, Oregon, seven years ago. Now our bread has landed in paradise,” said Dahl. “I can’t wait for the Hawaiian Costco members to a get taste of our signature Northwest bread, and for those visiting mainlanders to get a taste of home in between Mai Tais and snorkeling trips.”

The line of wholesome, nutritious bread first came to the islands in Safeway stores in early May. The company hopes to continue its expansion to other stores throughout the islands, and is expanding in other mainland states as well. The bread will be more widely available in Southern California in late summer.

Dave’s Killer Bread will host demos in each Hawaii Costco starting this Saturday and Sunday, and will continue through the end of September. A full list of demo times and locations can be found on the Dave's Killer Bread: calendar.

During the sampling events, all varieties of Dave’s Killer Bread will be discounted by $1.00. At each event, Dave and the “Killer” bread team will be sampling items from the full line of organic, whole grain products (16 varieties), including the new Good Seed Halos (bagels). In addition, the team will have Dave’s Killer Bread Coloring and Activity Books on hand for the younger fans, Dave’s Killer Bread t-shirts, and other promotional merchandise.

Dave practices his vision of "making the world a better place, one loaf of bread at a time," by speaking to and inspiring groups of at-risk youth, prisoners, business leaders, and a variety of other organizations. He believes that the only way to really keep growing is to share the great lessons he has learned. “At Dave’s Killer Bread, we strive to make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve. Sharing my story with people who find value and inspiration in it is what inspires me,” said Dahl.

Dahl grew up working in his parents’ Portland bakery, a small producer of natural and healthy breads, rolls, and cookies. Although it was never officially diagnosed, Dave struggled with severe depression, leading him down a road of crime and incarceration. The turning point came in 2001, about 3.5 years into his last sentence, when he discovered the strength of humility and the courage to ask for help. When he was released from prison in 2004, Dave reconnected with his brother, Glenn, who had taken over the family bakery business. Glenn gave Dave a chance to come back to the family business, and shortly thereafter Dave’s Killer Bread was born. He tells an abbreviated version of this story on the back of each bread package, ending with, "a whole lot of suffering has transformed an ex-con into an honest man who is doing his best to make the world a better place, one loaf of bread at a time." This heartfelt statement has helped guide the once small bakery through years of explosive growth. The company currently employs 260 people, one third of which are ex-felons like Dahl.

DAVE’S KILLER BREAD OXO-BIODEGRADABLE BAG STATEMENT

The Company Moves From Oxo-Biodegradable Plastic To Recycling

MEDIA CONTACT:
Dan Letchinger
503-335-8077x320, dan@daveskillerbread.com

Portland, Ore. – February 29, 2012 – Late in 2008, we began evaluating an oxo-biodegradable plastic for our bread bags. Oxo-degradable plastics, like traditional plastics, are made primarily from natural gas and petroleum, but producers of this type of plastic claim that when placed in the environment, it breaks down into carbon dioxide and small carbon chains that can be consumed by bacteria. Naturally, we were interested in learning more.

Many oxo-biodegradable plastics are not recyclable, which was a big concern for us. After some investigation, we determined that the particular plastic we were looking at had been verified by a third party to be recyclable. We also verified that this new plastic would have no effect on the food product that it was enclosing, and that the FDA had approved it for packaging. With all of these items checked off, we made the change and we were selling bread in oxo-biodegradable bags by early 2009.

Over the next few years, we received a lot of feedback about our choice to use oxo-biodegradable plastic. Most was positive; some was negative. In January of 2012, we had a meeting with David Allaway from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. He helped us to look at the situation from a new perspective.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality contends that if oxo-biodegradable plastic degrades in a low- or no-oxygen environment, methane will be produced. Methane is a very potent greenhouse gas that is far worse than carbon dioxide. Our landfills in Oregon do not provide much oxygen past the very top layer, so any degradation of our oxo-biodegradable plastic bags would emit methane. And on top of that, it isn’t clear whether or not the oxo-biodegradable bags would actually degrade with the landfill conditions found in the Northwest.

Given that on one hand the additive might have no function (if the bags don’t degrade in our landfills), and on the other there was the potential for additional methane to be released into the atmosphere (if they do degrade in our landfills), we decided that there was little upside to using oxo-biodegradable bags. The only possible upside left was if bread bags were being littered (and we sure hope ours aren’t) they would degrade in the open environment. In addition to these concerns, some plastic recyclers have expressed serious reservations about our oxo-biodegradable plastic bags because of concerns over their effect on the long term viability of products containing recycled oxo-biodegradable plastic.

Once our current run of printed oxo-biodegradable plastic bags are used up, we will convert all of our bread bags back to regular plastic film. We hope that we can convince you to either reuse or recycle bread bags once you have eaten your bread. They make great lunch bags, freezer over-wrap bags, and pet excrement disposal bags (just to name a few uses). Or recycle them at anywhere that recycles plastic film, such as New Seasons Markets.

RETURNING TO ITS ROOTS, DAVE’S KILLER BREAD COMMITS TO BEING A SEASON SPONSOR OF THE PORTLAND FARMERS MARKET FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW

Local bakery, which sold its first batch of loaves at Portland Farmers Market in 2005, supports nutrition incentive program for SNAP participants through sponsorship

Portland, Ore. – March 12, 2012 – Dave’s Killer Bread is proud to announce that it will return as a 2012 season sponsor of the Portland Farmers Market. In August of 2005, Dave’s Killer Bread was first introduced to the public at the Portland Farmers Market’s “Summer Loaf” artisan bread festival. Since then, the Milwaukie, Oregon based company has expanded considerably, with products available at a variety of grocery stores across the Western United States. As a way of showing continued support of farmers markets and remaining involved in this excellent community organization, Dave’s Killer Bread is excited to participate in the kick-off of the inaugural Winter Market beginning Saturday, January 7th. Dave’s Killer Bread will be sampling and selling from their full product line, including the new Good Seed Halos (bagels).

In addition to supporting the Portland Farmers Market, Dave’s Killer Bread will donate 25% of sales generated during their market appearances to Fresh Exchange, a nutrition incentive program for SNAP participants. Last year, Dave’s Killer Bread proudly donated over $5,000 to the Fresh Exchange token matching program. This corresponds to helping 1,000 low-income residents purchase fresh food and vegetables for their families at farmers markets, while still supporting local farmers and food producers. “The fact that Dave’s Killer Bread started out as a vendor at our markets makes having them as a sponsor especially poignant. We are so pleased to welcome them back as a sponsor for the second year, but what’s really touching is how they whole-heartedly support the Fresh Exchange token matching program for SNAP recipients. Between those two areas combined, we are proud to have them as our top contributing sponsor,” said Trudy Toliver, Executive Director of the Portland Farmers Market. “Fresh Exchange allows our markets to match up to $5 for SNAP participants, which increases the buying power of low income folks and supports our local farmers,” added Toliver.

According to Dave Dahl, President of Dave’s Killer Bread, the success of the brand would not have been possible without the seven years of support from the Portland Farmers Market. “My team and I couldn’t wait to go to the markets every week. It was such a great experience to sell our breads, meet customers face-to-face, and tell the story behind our products. Portland Farmers Market has helped launch many local food businesses. It is such a special organization that we want to continue to support as a sponsor,” said Dave Dahl, President of Dave’s Killer Bread. “It is a full circle, true success story and a partnership that we are extremely proud of,” said Toliver.

Palate Dreams Do Come True! Dave’s Killer Bread Announces the Official Debut of its 100 Percent Whole Grain Seedy Bagel, Recently Named Good Seed Halos by a Local Fan One of the first boiled, whole grain bagels on the market will be sold at many stores the Killer Breads are currently carried

Portland, Ore., November 18, 2011 – Dave’s Killer Bread (“DKB”) proudly announces the official debut of its 100 percent whole grain seedy bagel, the Good Seed Halos.

The Bagels were test marketed this summer at the place it all began, the Portland Farmers Market, where fans cast their votes on the taste and texture of the new super-seedy halos. The bagels are now in stores at many locations the killer breads are currently carried (see store locator) throughout the Northwest United States, such as Safeway, Whole Foods, Metropolitan Markets, Zupan’s, PCC, Fred Meyer, New Seasons, Winco, and many local markets.

Unlike any other shelf bagel, the Good Seed Halos are made with organic whole grains and healthy seeds such as flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds, sweetened with organic molasses and evaporated cane juice. The bagels are boiled before baking, like traditional, New York-style bagels. Official taste-testers of the bagels concluded they are ultra-rich in flavor with a soft chewy texture to create a hardy breakfast, snack or lunch sandwich. Key nutrition facts: 100% Whole Grain, 1590 mg Omega-3 ALA, 15g Protein, 11g Fiber, 300 calories.

"We sold our first loaves of bread back in August 2005 at the Portland Farmers Market, and we are proud to announce that six years later, we introduced our newest product at the market," said Dave Dahl, President, Dave’s Killer Bread. Fans taste-tested and cast their votes on the flavor and textures of the bagels, helping the company refine the bagels to perfection. “We hope our fans and new customers alike enjoy the new halos as much as we do.”
